History |
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences was founded depending upon (associated with) the Samsun Ondokuz Mayıs University by taking into consideration the decree of the council of the ministers dated 07.02.1999 and numbered 98/10569. The education was commenced with the Department of Turkish Language and Literature, and the Department of Mathematics in 1999. In 2000, the History and Biology Departments, and in 2003 the Physics, Chemistry and Foreign Languages Departments were opened, as well. At present, the Departments Turkish Language and Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and History continue the education in our faculty which is now depended upon (associated with) the ORDU UNIVERSITY, founded with the decision that was approved on the date, 01.03.2006 in compliance with the additional article 69 of the law no. 5467 and published in the official gazette dated 17.03.2006 and numbered 26111. As for the department of Foreign Languages, a request about student admission was proposed to the council of higher education in the academic year 2011-2012. No request regarding to student admission has been made, yet for the department of Physics together with Philosophy, Sociology, Psychology and Contemporary Turkish Dialects Departments. |

Specific Arrangements For Recognition Of Prior Learning (Formal, Non-Formal and Informal) |
The recognition of prior learning process is still at an early stage in the institutions of higher education in Turkey. Therefore, the recognition of prior learning is not literally initiated in all programs of Ordu University. However, at the beginning of fall term, an English proficiency exam is held for the English course that is compulsory for departments. Students who complete the learning process of the course on their own or alternatively who are of the opinion that they provide their learning outputs for this course have a right to take this exam. Students who pass the exam will be exempt from the related course in syllabus. |
Qualification Requirements and Regulations |
In order to obtain a bachelor degree in Mathematics (or to assume the title of mathematician ), students must satisfy the following conditions;
1. All courses must be passed with at least a letter grade of DC.
2. Cumulative grade point average must be at least 2.00 on the scale of 4.00.

Profile of The Programme |
The Department of Mathematics was founded within the Faculty of Arts and Sciences in 1999. The Department has 21 academic staff consisting of a Professor, an Associate Professor, 7 Assistants Professor, and 12 Research Assistants (4 of those are in the instructor training program and 8 of those are in abroad (in compliance with the law no. 1416, and The Program of Academic Member Teaching )).
31 students were admitted to the daytime education for the first time in the academic year, 1999-2000. In the academic year, 2008-2009 the evening education was launched with 41 students. The education has been continuing with a total of 294 (169 daytime and 125 evening) students since the academic year, 2010-2011.
The department provides education and training, and research in the fields Calculus, Algebra, Geometry Topology and Applied Mathematics as they are all considered the key areas of mathematics.
Besides, the department synchronously undertakes the task of carrying out other departments’ undergraduate courses in mathematics.
Our vision is to train and support staff who have a voice in Mathematics both in national and international level, who perform works and studies contributing to science and technology with their research in pure and applied mathematics, who continue self-improving, and who have appropriate social leadership skills.

Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples |
Students who graduate from the Department of Mathematics and complete Pedagogical Formation Education in the Faculty of Educational Sciences find the opportunity to work as a teacher in public or private secondary education institutions and also they can work as a computer operator, a researcher and a planner in various public and private enterprises. Successful graduates may have a chance of working as a Research Assistant in Universities and have the opportunity to study graduate education in abroad. |
Access to Further Studies |
Candidates who successfully complete undergraduate program, and satisfy the conditions of getting a valid mark from the academic personnel and postgraduate education entrance exam and having enough knowledge of English language can apply for graduate programs (master and doctoral degree). |
Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading |
Students are subjected to take at least a midterm exam and a final exam for all courses. The contribution of the midterm exam and the final exam to Final grade is 40% and 60%, respectively. All exams are graded out of 100 points. Students are required to score at least 50 from final exam. Grades are expressed with 4 point grading system. Students who get any of the letter grades of AA, BA, BB, CB, and CC are deemed to be successful for that course. A student having the letter grade of DC will be considered as successful for related course if his/her average grade of the relevant term (corresponding GPA) is 2.00 or more. |
Graduation Requirements |
Graduation Conditions
Students who successfully complete all courses of the corresponding program (meet the total of 240 ECTS) and get the final average grade as at least 2.00 on the scale of 4.00 will be awarded with a bachelor degree and assumed as a mathematician.
