Objectives of the Course
The course aims to provide the students with theoretical knowledge and analytical and creative skills as to understand the origins of western culture and evaluate literature from an academic point of view by learning through reading literary texts and literary theory and criticism texts, and participating in lectures and seminar discussions.

Learning Outcomes
1Acquire knowledge of the literary terms and of the formal and thematic dimensions of the written texts belonging to different genres and trends
2By engaging with analysis and different interpretative perspectives, assess competing historical and critical points of view and understand the relationship between literary theory and practice
3Think historically and understand the relationship between the aesthetic dimension of the written text and the wide range of social, cultural and other relevant contexts
4Enhance the knowledge and understanding of English language, and develop skills in oral and written exposition and argumentation of ideas
5Develop as independent learners and thinkers, able to transfer the acquired knowledge and intellectual skills to further academic work or to different employment and life experiences

Course Contents
in different fields of literary concern reified as courses of the university curriculum. The students learn the basic literary terminology, theoretical and critical perspectives on genres and trends, issues related to the historicity of the literary phenomenon, and the methodology of research applicable in the approach to the elements of the literary system.

2The rise and development of literary genres and trends; the typology of literary genres; literary trend – literary movement – literary period: degrees of identification and separation;
3Literary periods, movements and trends I: Antiquity, Middle Ages, Renaissance, Humanism, Baroque, Neoclassicism;
4Literary periods, movements and trends II: Romanticism, Realism, Naturalism, Aestheticism, Impressionism, Expressionism, Symbolism;
5Literary periods, movements and trends III: Imagism, Dadaism, Modernism, Avant-gardism, Stream-of Consciousness, Post-Modernism;
6The narrative (epic) genre I: general characteristics and theoretical preliminaries, the development of the genre (from ancient epic to modern fiction);
7The narrative (epic) genre II: the textual typology (novel, short story, novella, narrative poetry);
8The narrative (epic) genre III: major devices of textual organization (narration, narrative, narrator, narratee, point of view, chronotope, plot, setting, character, etc.);

10The lyrical genre I: general characteristics and theoretical preliminaries, the development of the genre;
11The lyrical genre II: the textual typology (elegy, ode, sonnet, dramatic monologue, etc.);
12The lyrical genre III: major devices of textual organization and the figurative language (versification, prosody, scansion, rhythm, rhyme, meter, tone, lyricism, imagery, symbol, metaphor, comparison, simile, paradox, oxymoron, apostrophe, hyperbole, etc.);
13The dramatic genre I: general characteristics and theoretical preliminaries, the development of the genre (ancient drama to modern theatre of the absurd);
14The dramatic genre II: the textual typology (tragedy, comedy, tragicomedy, melodrama, historical play, commedia dellÂ’ arte, etc.);
15Drama genre III: basic devices of textual order (monologue, dialogue, stage representation, character, soliloquy, turning point, climax, resolution, act, scene, prologue, etc.).
