Objectives of the Course
The main aim of this course is to introduce the characteristics of novel as a literary genre, examine the emergence and the development of English novel.

Learning Outcomes
1Students will be able to learn the characteristics of novel and distinguish it from the other genres, and be able to use the theoretical knowledge required for novel analysis.
2Students will be able to interpret the contribution of British history and culture to the emergence and development of English novel in the 18th century and early 19th century.
3Students will know the authors who have contributed to the development of English novel and they will be able to analyse their works.

Course Contents
Key features of novel, kinds of novel and the theoretical knowledge needed for novel analysis are taught. The authors and their works that have contributed to the development of English novel are introduced. The literary works are analysed and discussed in light of the characteristics of the period.
