| Profile of The Programme | Our country has a great potential for production of seafood with its 25 million hectares of sea area and 8333 km long coastlines, 1.3 million hectares of lakes, ponds and reservoirs and 33 rivers with 177714 km total length. But this potential has not been used in the meaning of aquaculture untill end of 1980 when the Fisheries Faculties and Faculties of Marine Sciences started to give graduates. With the increasing numbers of engineer of seafood and Engineer of Fisheries Technology production in aquaculture reached to 160.000 tons at 2009 where it was only 6.000 tones in 1990. Production from hunting has not been at a satisfactory level and has shown significant variations over the years because the arrangements in fisheries management has not been done yet and also required prequotions has not been taken. Average consumption of fish, which has a undisputed importance in healy diets, in our country is way lower then the world average. If the production potential, which expressed with the numbers above, would be evaluate more effectively, both production amonth and consumption of fish in our nation would increase which would help to create a more healty community. And this is only possible with the employment of the well educated Professionals. We hope that Fisheries Technology Engineers who graduated from our department has enough knowledge on their fields and would have their rightful place in fisheries and maritime industry.
It is a great advantage of existing of Fatsa Faculty of Marine Science and our department in the East Blacksea where fishing is most common. In this area there are lots of fresh water and sea area suitable for aquaculture. Fisheries Technology Engineers who will be graduate from our department will play important roles for evaluating these resources. Additionally, with acceptance of the limited shift officer education by the commision warranted by undersecretariat of maritime affairs, our graduates will contribute to close the deficit in maritime transport sector.
| Occupational Profiles of Graduates With Examples | Fisheries Technology Engineers who graduated from Department of Fisheries Technology Engineering can employ at Turkey Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock, Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works, Ministry of Environment and Urban Planning Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs, municipalities, firms which deals with aquaculture, hunting, processing, marketing of seafoods also in the firms dealing with producing fisheries equipment, fishing-net factories and shipyards building boats and fisheries ships and also they can found and manage their own business. Besides, they can be teachers at maritime high schools which are connected to Ministry of National Education and can also work as seaman in fisheries ships and commercial ships if they complete the yearlong internship of ship and harbour and successfully passes the exam organised by Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications to have restricted watchkeeping officer. | Access to Further Studies | Candidates who succesfully finished their under graduate education can attend to postgraduate (master and doctorate) programs if they gets passing grades from the ALES exam and have enough English grammar knowledge. | Examination Regulations, Assessment and Grading | Student subjected to one mid-term and one final exam from all lessons except for professional application and dissertation lessons. Contribution of mid-term and final exams to the final grade are 40% and 60%, respectively. All exams evaluates over 100 points. It is obligatory to have at least 50 points from mid-term and final exams. Notes expresses in 4 point system. Students who have one of the letter grades AA, BA, BB, CB and CC from a lesson have been considers as successful. Students who have a grade DC from a particular lesson considers as succesfull if they have a weighted average over 2 at the same term. | Graduation Requirements | Students who successfully complete all the lessons in the curriculum (equivalent to totally 240 AKTS) and have achieved a weighted average of at least 2.00 upon 4.00, who succesfully complete the dissertation and has a passing grade from professional obligatory intership deserves to graduate with the appellation of Engineer of Fisheries Technology. | Mode of Study (Full-Time, Part-Time, E-Learning ) | Full-Time | Address, Programme Director or Equivalent | Programme Director: Assist.Prof.Dr. Mehmet AYDIN
