Objectives of the Course
This course covers discussion of emergence of modernization, theories of modernization and Turkish modernization experience from a critical point of view. Therefore, this course covers topics such as emergence of modernization from a historical point of view, social and historical conditions of modernization, modernization process, modernization processes of western societies, non-western societies and Turkey, early and late modernization theories, “modernization project,” orientalism. Especially modernization experience of Turkey and historical and theoretical problems of this experience will have been discussed in this class. Main teaching form of this course is seminar. Each student has to participate class discussions. The students also have to chose a given topic, prepare written homework and present it in the class.
