Objectives of the Course
To examine period 1923-1970 of the Turkish architecture; relation between republican ideology and architecture; Atatürk and architecture; Nationalist experiments in architecture; influences of the modern and internationals movements; architects, different approaches and buildings.

Learning Outcomes
1The ability to interpret and evaluate The influence of 20th century western architecture over Turkish Architecture in the republican period in the context of social and cultural history development of the period
2To have the theoretical knowledge of First National Architecture Period, Neo-Classical Turkish Style, National Architecture Renaissance, 1923-1932 Civil and Housing buildings, reflections of 1932-1940 periods economic, social and cultural context to architecture and foreign architects.
3To have the theoretical knowledge of Approaches in Turkey inspired by Bauhaus and CIAM, local architectures and their applied projects, International Style, Neo-Classical Style, and 2nd National Architectural Style
4To have the theoretical knowledge of Effects of 1950’s Modernism over Turkey, rationalization under the influence of modern architecture which is widespread in Europe and USA, departure from rationalism with Post-Modernism and theoretical level knowledge in efforts to bring Modern Architecture to local values
5The ability to evaluate the Architecture of Republican Period in a critical approach.

Formation of the republican ideology, principles of modernization and the Nationalization; the first national movement in architecture; construction of the modern capital Ankara; Second national movement in architecture and S. Hakkı Eldem; foreign architects, International architecture, the plurality of approaches.

141960’s: Moving away from rationalism in parallel with criticisms on Modernism and rising of Post-Modernism, the efforts for integration of vernacular and international architecture.
15 From 1970 to Presents: the effects of Pluralism, Late Modernism, Post-Modernism, Deconstructivism and other movements originated in Western world and outcomes.
