Objectives of the Course
In this course you will explore the history of the Middle East from its pre-Islamic roots to the present day. Through the course texts and lecture you will encounter a dynamic and diverse region, integral to the development of the rest of the world. As a class, we will examine how religion as well as conceptions of ethnicity, gender, and class have impacted the identity and lived experience of Middle Eastern peoples, and how attitudes to such constructions have changed. While a large portion of the course will center on social and cultural history, we will also consider the political and military developments in the late Ottoman Empire and post-Ottoman Middle East in an effort to understand the contemporary challenges faced by the region. Towards this end, we will investigate interaction and exchange between the Middle East and the West in the colonial and post-colonial world
