Objectives of the Course
This course targets a thorough understanding of the emergence, development and evolution processes of the physical and mental activities of the mankind distinguished under the categories of game, movement culture and sports throughout history.

1Define and distinguish games and movement cultures; have a basic understanding of the games and movement cultures of different world communities developed since Antiquity.
2Interpret and evaluate the emergence and evolution of gymnastics, physical education and modern sports in social and historical perspective.
3Follow the development and popularization of physical education and sports during the 20th century.
4Interpret the founding philosophy, and character and significance of the Modern Olympiads in a historical perspective.

Course Contents
The definition and scope of the physical activities grouped under movement culture, games and sports. Games and Olympiads in the Antiquity. A survey of games played in different parts of the globe in social-historical perspective. The emergence and evolution of gymnastics and physical education in the European culture. The birth of modern sports. Modern Olympiads, sports and physical education in the 20th century.
