Objectives of the Course
The course aims to introduce different communication systems of different countries in relation to their political, economic and social structures. It is also aimed to compare different systems so that it is possible to evaluate the media practices in Turkey.

Course Contents
Main theories of media systems: Authoritarian. Liberal, Social Responsibilty, Soviet-Communist, Development Media, Democratic Participant Theories. Contemporary media policies: privatization, deregulation. Broadcasting policies in USA and EU countries. Broadcasting in Turkey.

3Comparison of control mechanisms in different countries through different theories.
4Broadcasting system in USA. Main elements of broadcasting like networks, independent stations etc.
5Federal Communication Commission (FCC):Its practices and its role in the American media system
6Radio broadcasting in US. Public radios, community radios and characteristics of radio broadcasting in USA.
7Global broadcasting system.
8Midterm Exam
9BBC and private TV: Principles, practices and program structure.
10French Broadcasting System.
11Italian Broadcasting System.
12Changes in communication policies: Privatization and deregulation. Influence of liberal thought on communication.
13Main characteristics of Western Europe communication policies before and after 1980. The state of public broadcasting.
14Evaluations of broadcasting system and regulations through theories.
15Concentration and its effects in Turkey and around the world.
