This course aims to introduce the art of Gothic period together with its cultural, social and historical background.

5Student can tell the reflections of medieval religious thought on art with iconographic analysis.

Course Contents
Europe's historical geography and socio-cultural environment between 12-15th centuries. The factors that lead to the emergence of Gothic art. The effects of monastic organization and scholastic philosophy on artistic mentality. Abbot Suger and the birth of the Gothic architecture. Characteristics of Early and High Gothic periods. Characteristics of Rayonnant and Flamboyant Gothic styles. Gothic sculpture and Gothic stained glass art. Important examples of Gothic art in Europe, especially in France.
