Objectives of the Course
Terrestrial Navigation has been prepared to give the students necessary knowledge for terrestrial navigation.

Course Contents
Definition and history of navigation, development of nautical instruments, the earth, its shape and rotation, poles, equator, Greenwich, latitudes, longitudes, difference of latitudes and longitudes, chart projections, specifications of the marine navigation charts, drawing a small area mercator chart, comparing the mercator projection with other kind of projections, chart catalogues and usage, symbols and abbreviations, notice to mariners, chart corrections, definition of distance and direction, nautical publications and specifications, lights and fog signals, light characteristics and specifications, buoyage systems, introduction to system A and B, symbols of the buoys on the charts.

6Chart catalogues and how to use them, The symbols and abbreviations used on charts , Updating and keeping records of the charts
7The concept of distance and direction from the sea, Course and bearing (relative, true), Rhumb Line and great circle
8Mid-term exam
9On Navigation calculating distances and bearings
10Magnetic compass, compass reading, compass reading systems,Earth's magnetic field, natural magnetic variations, declination, magnetic compass correction of errors
11Gyro compass, principles of work, operation and failures, calculating the Gyro error, the application of course and bearing
12The information obtained from other nautical publications
13Notices to mariners,Updating charts and other publications and ECDIS electronic chart system
14Use of navigational aids located on the coast, lighthouses and buoys
15IALA lateral and cardinal buoyage systems
